How to Pick the Perfect Youth ATV for Your Child

Nov. 20 2023 ATV By Redline Power Sports

All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are fun for all ages, encouraging families to embrace adventure while bonding – with each other and with nature! Choosing the right ATV for the kiddos is key, as well as putting the proper guidelines in place. Be sure younger riders understand safety protocols before climbing aboard.

To choose the right new ride, consider the following:

Age: Children aged six to 11 should use an ATV with an engine under 70 cc. Children 12 to 15 can safely operate an ATV with a more powerful engine, about 70–90 cc. Only teens 16 and over should operate an ATV with an adult engine size, up to 700 cc.

Capability: Because you know your child best, be sure to take their individual capabilities into consideration. No two kids are the same, so we recommend taking your rider’s developmental maturity – both physical and emotional – into account.

Size: Make sure your child is large enough to perform the following functions:

  • Easily reach the brake by rotating their foot on the footrest. Check the seat height and distance from the foot pegs and brakes to ensure a safe ride.
  • Sit comfortably and maneuver the controls.
  • Turn the handlebars and maintain a steady grip when seated.
  • Operate the throttle comfortably.

Tips for Maximizing Your Child’s Safety

Taking the necessary precautions not only gives parents peace of mind, but offers kids independence – and fosters a lifelong love of the outdoors. We recommend these safety tips:

  1. Always require proper riding gear.
Outfit the ATV with reflectors and proper lighting to increase visibility in all conditions. Next, invest in the best quality gear available, like a properly fitting helmet and boots, hand and eye protection, and full-length clothing.
  2. Supervise riders at all times.
Be sure that your child understands that they should only operate an ATV when an adult is present. Even when your child seems comfortable riding, keep an eye on them at all times to prevent a potentially dangerous situation.
  3. Never permit riding on roadways.
Public roads are not designed for ATVs. Stick to designated trails and off-road parks instead.

Top Youth ATV Brands Beloved by Kids

ATVs can make awesome gifts for kids with an adventurous attitude – especially if they don’t mind a little mud! Popular brands like Can-Am, Polaris, Honda, Yamaha, and Kawasaki offer kid-friendly models optimized for both safety and performance. Check out these family-approved models:

Can-Am Renegade 70 EFI

Specifically for riders age 6 and up, this youth ATV is built for trail and recreational riding. Its rugged appearance pairs with advanced tech to appeal to younger riders. Plus, it boasts an air-cooled 70cc single-cylinder four-stroke engine, a fully automatic CVT transmission, electric start, and a solid rear axle with a chain drive.

Polaris Sportsman 110

The perfect entry-level ATV, this model is best for ages 10 and up – with adult supervision, of course. Industry-leading safety features include an adjustable speed limiter, industry-exclusive safety kit and LED lights, allowing kiddos to tackle any terrain with confidence. An 110 EFI engine, long travel rear suspension, 3.5" of ground clearance, and a front and rear gear rack combine to provide responsive handling and a memorable ride!

HONDA TRX90X AND HONDA TRX250X

The Honda TRX90X four-wheeler employs a no-clutch transmission that lets kids focus on fun while still learning to shift gears. Recommended for kids ages 10 and older, this model features a 86cc 4-stroke single cylinder SOHC.

Think of the Honda TRX250X as the big brother, packing a more powerful 229cc engine under the hood. Using a shaft drive instead of a chain helps minimize maintenance, and the Honda-exclusive SportClutch gives new riders (age 16 and up) the opportunity to learn how to operate a manual clutch without fear of stalling.

Yamaha Raptor 90

Equipped with a 90cc 4-stroke SOHC, the Raptor 90 features a gated shifter and electric start with backup kickstart. Designed for kids ages 10 and up, this fun-to-drive four-wheel is also available in a slightly more powerful 125cc model for kids with more experience on the trails.

Kawasaki KFX90

Crafted for kiddos ages six and up, this model features an electric start and full floorboards – perfect for protecting little feet. An adjustable throttle limiter allows adults to set the speed and performance to match their child’s skill level.
